Porsche Taycan Annihilates Coast-to-Coast Charging Record

Porsche Taycan Annihilates Coast-to-Coast Charging Record

By Phil Royle – Jan. 28, 2022

In the ICE world, running from coast to coast “cannonball run” style in the shortest time possible is an underground competition that boggles the mind – both in that these drivers can make the run between New York and California so quickly, and that people are willing to break the law and endanger the public so egregiously. But in the EV world, the record for the 2,800-plus mile sea-to-shining-sea journey is often measured in a different way: charging time. And now, a new record has been set that utterly demolishes the EV coast-to-coast charging record set just months ago.

Wayne Gerdes set the new coast-to-coast EV charging in a 2021 Porsche Taycan equipped with the Performance Battery Plus.

The prior EV coast-to-coast EV record involved 7 hours, 10 minutes, and 1 second of charging in a 2022 Kia EV6, with that record being announced late last year during the 2021 LA Auto Show. That run reset a record that had just been set in October 2021, when a rented Tesla Model S Long Range ran from Long Island, N.Y., to Emeryville, Calif., with 7 hours and 12 minutes of charging.

The new EV charging record, set by Wayne Gerdes in a 2021 Porsche Taycan equipped with the Performance Battery Plus, knocked these charging time records on their heads, though, with just 2 hours, 26 minutes, and 48 seconds spent at chargers.

Porsche’s recent coast-to-coast charging record was logged, and tracked with video and GPS.

The charging network of choice was reportedly Electrify America, which Gerdes located via EA’s and Plug Share’s apps. Ensuring the record was legitimate, all 2,834.5 miles of his journey were filmed and, as seems to be the case with all vehicle speed records as of late, GPS tracking was utilized.

“I’m proud and honestly a little surprised to have set the new benchmark by such a margin.,” Gerdes said after the trip. “The Taycan performed even better than expected. Its performance, comfort and road holding were excellent, but the standout metric alongside the charging capacity was its efficiency. I’m grateful to both Porsche for supporting me and to Electrify America’s network, which made it possible.”

Gerdes appeared to exclusively use Electrify America DC fast chargers to set the record.

Porsche didn’t reveal the total time Gerdes spent traveling across America, but it will undoubtedly be a while before EVs can hold a candle to the ICE records. While the start and end locations do not seem to be identical, the delta of the times we do have tell the story: The Model S Long Range that set the coast-to-coast EV charging record in October 2021 completed the journey in 42 hours and 17 minutes, resetting a 44-hour record set in a Porsche Taycan. Meanwhile, the current “cannonball run” record for an ICE vehicle is now down to 25 hours, 39 minutes.
