2022 Audi e-tron S Models Add Tri-Motor Performance to Lineup

2022 Audi e-tron S Models Add Tri-Motor Performance to Lineup

By Edward A. Sanchez – Aug. 17, 2021

We’ve followed the developments of Audi, arguably the Volkswagen Group’s most tech-forward division, and the growth of its e-tron portfolio, from the Q4 e-tron on the lower-end to the Taycan’s sibling, the e-tron GT. Now, Audi is turning its attention back to the original e-tron SUV, and its new stablemate, the e-tron Sportback, with the S variants.

While neither model can hope to approach the scorching performance of a Model S Plaid, or even the e-tron GT or Porsche Taycan, the performance figures are plenty respectable from an objective standpoint: 0-60 mph in a claimed 4.3 seconds, and combined output of 496 hp and 718 lb-ft of torque in “boost” mode. This level of performance is delivered via a tri-motor setup, one front, two rear. Audi claims this arrangement was chosen for the precise torque vectoring allowed by independently controlled rear motors. In normal driving, the powertrain is rated at 429 hp and 596 lb-ft of torque.

Like the standard e-tron, the S models get a 95 kWh battery pack, with a claimed range of 208 miles for the e-tron and 212 miles for the Sportback. For added charging convenience, there’s a J1772 Level 2 charge port on both sides, but like the Taycan, the CCS DC fast charging port is only on the driver’s side. The e-tron S models can support up to 150 kW, with a claimed charge time of less than 30 minutes from 5% to 80%. Audi has partnered with Qmerit to facilitate home charger installations.

The U.S.-bound e-tron S will sport Digital Matrix LED headlights boasting fewer features than it’s European counterpart.

In addition to the potent new powertrain, the e-tron S models feature Digital Matrix LED headlights, with 1.3 million individual pixels. Unfortunately, many of the headlights’ functions are hobbled by DOT regulations, but European models have all sorts of interesting features, including lane marking and warning message projection, and dynamic beam projection that can aim the headlight beams out of the direct sightline of oncoming drivers.

There’s also a predictive traffic light feature that can allow drivers to ride the green light “wave” by maintaining an average speed that synchronizes with the traffic signals, as well as give a green light “countdown.” An integrated toll module is compatible with all major road toll systems in the U.S.

For those that the “base” models aren’t opulent and indulgent enough, dual-pane front windows, power soft-close doors, and a front-passenger heated, ventilated, and memory seat are available.

Pricing starts at $85,895 for the e-tron S, $88,495 for the e-tron S Sportback, $90,895 for the e-tron S Prestige, and $93,495 for the e-tron S Sportback Prestige. All prices include the $1,095 destination fee. The e-tron S and Sportback will be in U.S. dealerships in the fall.
